25 Things You May Not Know About Me

September 2nd, 2009 by Rob Willis Leave a reply »

Rob WillisLike many others I have been tagged! I have been given the challenge to write a list of things that people do not know about me.

This challenge was originally thrown down by Gary Simpson (Gazz-man), and as a result I was tagged by Petra Weiss.

Always up for the challenge, I decide to add my list.

1. I have a real passion for personal development

Ever since reading the book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, I have been deeply committed to improving myself & helping those around me. Since that time I have become a student of Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Mark Victor Hansen, just to name a few.

My Mission Statement reads: ” To assist and encourage others to achieve their full potential in life”.

I have recently been approached by the Brian Tracy Group to join the to achieve this goal.

2. I am Self Employed as an IT Consultant

I have been working in the IT industry for over 20 years now. In that time I have paid my dues & now work as an IT Consultant.

(Yeah, I know this sounds boring, and at times it is) I am currently working towards a full time Internet Marketer.

Arc de Triomphe

3. I once took a photo of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris with no Cars in view

For those of you who don’t know, the Arc de Triomphe stands in the centre of one of the busiest round-a-bouts on the world.

It was by sheer luck that I happened to take a photo with no cars to be seen.

4. I have scuba dived in the Great Barrier Reef

While on holidays in Cairnes,  Queensland Australia, I had the opportunity to go diving on the Great Barrier Reef.

Although I had never been diving before, I had the chance to do an introductory dive. From that time onwards I have been hooked.

5. I have Sky Dived from 14,000 feet (Free Fall)

For my 40th Birthday, my wife bought me a skydive.

Not being one to do things by halves, I didn’t want to do a tandem dive, but a free fall.

Loved the experience & would recommend it to anyone that gets the opportunity.

6. I have performed on stage at the London Palladium in front of 2,000 people (Singing & Dancing)

While living in England between 2001 & 2003, I sat down & watched Moulin Rouge one day.

After watching I thought, “I could do that”, & then jumped on the Internet and looked for auditions.

Sure enough I found one & ended up singing & dancing on stage at the London Palladium.

7. I have a strong Christian background. Although I no longer practice (ie go to Church), I still believe

It is a funny thing faith. You either believe in the existence of God or you don’t.

I Do!

8. I am married and have 3 wonderful boys.

I got married back in 1993 on the hottest day ever recorded in Perth, Western Australia (46.7 degrees Celcius/116.06F)

Although we have had our moments, we are still happy together & have three wonderful boys, aged 16, 13 & 10

9. I am quite disorganized

I know I shouldn’t be quite this honest, but I am a little disorganised.

My desk is covered in paperwork, and I have many an unopened letter scattered about my office.

It is one of those things that I am working on.

10. I tend to be quite opinionated

This is a sticking point between my wife & myself.

If I believe in something strongly enough, I simply will not back down.

Here I am talking about core beliefs, not just a simple difference of opinion.

Things like moral conduct, sexual orientation, personal beliefs, etc.

11. I lived in England (Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire) for two years & worked at Tesco’s

Back at the start of 2001, one of my brothers died while riding his motor bike.

I decided shortly afterwards, that life was too short & you needed to live life to the fullest. (This is something I need to remind myself from time to time)

It was then that we decided to pack our bags & see the world from a different perspective.

So with 3 children in tow (aged 8, 5 & 1) we flew 24 hours to England.

This was a fantastic experience, that I would love to repeat one day.

(I will  have to blog about some of the stories I have)

12. I am not a pet lover

I can just here the backlash on this one.

I grew up with many pets as a child, but for some unknown reason I simply have no time for pets now.

About 20 month ago, I gave into my wife & boys and allowed them to get a pet dog. A Maltese Shiatsu.

I have still not warmed to the dog, although I have tried to get used to it.

13. I once helped demolish a house

Many years ago, as a fund raiser I had the chance to help demolish a house.

One of the people at out church, owned a demolition company & donated a job to the youth group, to demolish this house.

Now that is an experience to remember.

14. I have ridden shotgun in a demolition derby

Years ago, one of my friends decided to enter a car in a demotion derby at our local speedway.

His co-driver at the time had to pull out at the last minute (His parents did not want him to enter), so I ended up in the car.

Great fun!! Not something you get to do every day.

15. Favourite Book – Wuthering Heights

As I was growing up, I hated reading.

However, an old girlfriend of mine, introduced me to some of the classics & one of my all time favorites is Wuthering Heights.

16. Favourite Music – Don Henley

I have a very broad taste in music from Classical to Heavy metal (depending on the mood).

But one artist that I do not get sick of is Don Henley of the Eagles.

I have had the opportunity of seeing the Eagles live in concert twice now. Once at Earls Court in London & one at Subiaco Oval in Perth.

My favourite song by Don Henley is “Boys of Summer”

17. Favourite Movie – Lord of The Rings Trilogy

These movies are some of the most loyal to the book movies produced.

I would also have to add Silence of the Lambs to that list also.

18 . I leave things until the last minute

Probably one of my worst habits is leaving things until that last minute.

I am sure this is simply a case a getting organised and prioritising, but I often don’t get things done until I absolutely have to.

19. I work better from a list

Following on from the previous point, I find that I work far better if I have a list.

Give me a list of things to do & I will sweep through them very quickly.

The trouble is I do not often make my own lists….

20. I was once an Avon “lady” (representative) for a week

I don’t know if I have even told my wife about this one….

Back in about 1982, I traveled around Australia by bus.

I stayed with various friends I have made & needed to be able to pay my way.

One family I stayed with, the mother was an Avon representative, so being the young entrepreneur at heart I thought I would give it a go….

Needless to say, I was not very successful.

21. As a Child I had a Kangaroo as a pet

Contrary to popular belief, not every Australian child has a pet Kangaroo.

I however was one of the lucky children that did have one. (Actually I had 3 at one stage).

My parents applied & got a permit to get a kangaroo. Two of them escaped to the bush & one we ended up giving to the zoo.

22. I have sat in the Jump Seat of an airplane on landing (twice)

Long before September 11, I was flying on a business trip with my boss. He asked the air steward, if he could sit in the Jump Seat for take off. The steward said that it was too late, but suggested that he could have it for landing.

As my boss had “been there done that” he suggested that I take the jump seat.

That was an experience, unfortunately, unless you know someone now days, it is an experience not many people will get to have.

(The jumpseat is located just behind the pilots in the cockpit of an airplane)

23. I once saw someone jump to their death from the Eiffel Tower

Not the best of experiences I have ever had, but back in 2003, I was in Paris with a mate of mine who had come to visit while I was living in England.

We had a few hours to fill as we waited for your flight, so we decided to take a bit of a walk.

We walked under the Eiffel tower (which we climbed the day before) and started walking towards the Military Academy.

All of a sudden we heard all of these birds take off at once & the someone started to scream. Next thing we heard was what I thought to be a gun shot.

We turned around, and not 50 meters from where we stood, was what was left of someone splattered on the pavement.

The sad thing as this was probably 2 meters from a souvenir stand.

Not knowing how to process what had happened, my friend (who happened to be an Australian Police man) & I looked on and tried to work out the trajectory of the fall.

24. If I ever get stressed out, I love to take long walks along the beach

Like many people, I get a little stressed out from time to time & need some time out.

The best place for me to do this, is taking a long walk along a secluded beach and listen to music.

I find that after a two hour walk, I can start getting my head together again.

25. I can be a little lazy at times

I suppose further to point 18, unless I absolutely have to do something, I can tend to let it slide & not do it at all.

Although I am working on this, I still find it a little difficult get get the motivation to make some things happen.

So that is my list. There are many more things I could add, and perhaps I will add some more in further posts.

Feel free to post comments, ask questions and make a link to your own list.

To your Success

    Glenn,
    Thanks for the feedback.
We often forget the blessed lives that we have. It is great to create a list like this & be reminded of our blessings.

    Hi Rob,
I find myself pretty disorganized too. I try really hard, but it is a struggle. Wow, skydiving! I don’t know if I would have the guts for that one. I would love to go hang gliding someday, but that’s quite a bit different from free falling. I won’t say anything about #12. 😉 I’m exactly the same on #19. If I don’t write a list at the beginning of my day at work, I’m not near as productive.

    18. I am the complete opposite – because my partner is a “last minute” guy and it drives me nuts!;)
    20. Gotta love it!
    23. OMG, what a traumatic experience!
    24. If I lived closer, I would de-stress with you!;)

I am really sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. Why does it take events like these sometimes to make us stop and think about the life we are living?

List well done, it is great to get to know you better!

I am a student of Alex Jeffreys I have been looking around at fellow students blogs and came across yours. Definitely one of the best. I felt I had to leave a comment because your blog is simply, so inspirational and informative, It has given me hope and ideas to better mine.
It is so clean and fresh looking. I am always worried I overdo it myself, to much content you know. Your blog is just right. I would appreciate if you would pass comment on mine just to confirm I haven’t overdone it. On my blog I am doing a theme on successful internet marketers. Really like to know what you think as I am pretty new to all this layout stuff. I hope one day that I can write about your internet success. Keep up the good work

  6. Looks like you’ve had an interesting life. Some of your items that I can identify with are: #9 – disorganized, #10 – I don’t call it opinionated, but I do have some very strong beliefs and a strong moral compass, #18 – Wait till last minute – I call it procrastination, but only for the things I really just don’t want to do. #19 – I have lists everywhere, #25 – lazy – that’s why I kept looking for the Internet Marketing solution that didn’t require much work but still made you money (doesn’t exist).

But I must take exception to #5: I see no good reason for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane…I’m a pilot.

I just composed my 25 list. Not as easy as you would think. Take a look!
